Can You Wear Pewter Pendants in the Ocean?

Hi Everyone,

One of the most common questions I receive from customers and ocean lovers alike is: “Can I wear my pewter pendant in the ocean?” It’s a great question, especially since our jewellery is inspired by the sea and many want to keep that connection even while swimming or diving.

Understanding Pewter Jewellery and Its Ocean Compatibility

First, let’s clarify what pewter is. Our pendants are crafted from lead-free pewter, which is essentially nearly pure tin. This metal is a popular choice for jewellery because it’s non-rusting and hypoallergenic, making it a safe and attractive option for everyday wear.

However, pewter is not the same as stainless steel or solid silver when it comes to durability in extreme environments like saltwater. While pewter itself does not rust, it can still be vulnerable to wear and damage from the harsh conditions found in the ocean.

Why Saltwater Affects Pewter Pendants

Saltwater is highly corrosive. Even metals that don’t rust can suffer from corrosion or degradation when exposed to saltwater over time. Our pewter pendants are coated with a clear acrylic finish that serves as a protective barrier, keeping the metal safe and shiny. But this finish can wear off or degrade with prolonged contact with saltwater, causing the pendant to lose its original luster or develop minor surface damage.

What About the Pendant Cord?

Another important part of your pendant is the cord. We use black braided cords made of durable acrylic, not leather. Acrylic is much more resistant to moisture, making it a better choice for ocean or pool environments. Unlike leather, it won’t absorb water, rot, or degrade as quickly when wet. Still, it’s best to avoid constant soaking to keep the cord looking great for longer.

Tips for Wearing Your Pewter Pendant in the Ocean

If you love wearing your Big Blue Dive pendant while swimming or enjoying the ocean, here are some simple tips to help maintain its beauty and longevity:

  1. Limit Exposure: Try not to wear your pendant for extended periods underwater or in saltwater environments.
  2. Rinse Thoroughly: After any exposure to ocean water, rinse your pendant and cord with cool, fresh water to remove salt and residues.
  3. Dry Carefully: Pat dry your jewellery with a soft cloth and avoid leaving it wet or damp for long periods.
  4. Store Safely: When not in use, keep your pendant in a dry, cool place, ideally in its original pouch or box.

Final Thoughts: Keep the Ocean Spirit Alive, Responsibly

Our jewellery is designed to celebrate the ocean’s beauty and spirit, but it’s important to treat it with care to keep it looking its best. Wearing your pewter pendant in the ocean occasionally is fine, but for daily or frequent use in saltwater, take these precautions to protect your precious piece.

Thank you so much for supporting Big Blue Dive and helping us keep the ocean spirit alive — one pendant at a time.
