About the Artist

The oceans are full of many beautiful and exotic animals. With the aid of scuba gear, a snorkel, or just free diving, anyone can explore the oceans. Roland St. John is one of these people. As a diver for almost 20 years he has traveled to some of the most spectacular dive sites in the world. During his trips he has photographed and filmed amazing animals, which have inspired him to create and sculpt his collection. Roland uses the film to capture accurate and detailed images of each species giving him the ability to create some incredibly detailed work. The footage also captures the flowing motion, which helps him to sculpt his other, more stylized works of art. Working with different materials has also allowed him to create a variety of gifts to wear or for your home.

Since childhood Roland has been fascinated with all species of animals and was drawn to the ocean where finding new species was never a problem. His love for nature has led him to use his art to help create awareness and become involved in protecting threatened species and help end acts of cruelty to marine life around the world.

In the past Roland was a freelance artist for Ann Klein, Joan and David, Gucci, Jay Strongwater, and many more. He then created Big Blue- Aquatic Gifts in 1996 and now offers over 100 styles with many more to come.

Big Blue- Aquatic Gifts is a strong supporter of The Sea Shepherds Conservation Society where Roland has designed and donated two pin styles to help end the Canadian seal hunt, to help save the critically endangered Leatherback sea turtle, and to help them in there mission to protect our oceans.

“You have to connect people with nature so they may truly appreciate it.  Only then will they begin to help protect it.”

- Roland St. John
